Anyone else watching some of his vintage MRE eating videos? Here’s a 1942 “biscuit” MRE. Suprisingly good. I’m interested in how that coffee really does taste. For the really serious MRE connoisseur, check out his review of a 118 year old second boer war MRE....

right here.

eww. A daring person who sounds like he would totally share an MRE with you and discuss enlightenment.

I don’t know about daring. You can tell by the way that guy talks that he’s out of his fucking mind. I can only imagine what sort of poison that stuff was made with.

“Is that mold?”

Nah, it’s probably asbestos that they sprinkled on for flavoring.

According to my dad, the best use of peanut butter in the old C-rations that were equipped with it was to place the can in a campfire upside down, to make a peanut butter rocket.

(C-rations made up a good amount of their camping supplies when he was a kid).

I remember that he posted on an MRE enthusiast forum (?!?! ) about getting sick ... here’s a properly written article about him, plus the choice quote:

https://www.gq.com/story/steve1989-eats-50-year-old-rations

In 2015, Thomas was hospitalized with E. coli after eating a less-than-one-year-old Ukrainian ration from a “bad batch.” He didn’t have health insurance at the time, and the $15,531 medical bill for his recovery made that ration the most expensive he’s ever had.

Some of the stuff does hold up remarkably well, others, exactly as well as you’d expect. Nothing in between.

I’m surprised by how good the cigarettes he finds are, considering they go completely stale after about 18 months on the shelf, but I suppose the accessory packs in rations are sealed much better.
